The City of Seattle has asked neighborhoods to “Be Prepared” to survive for 3 days in a major disaster without 911, phones, internet, power and other vital city services. Queen Anne’s Boy Scout Troop 72 has committed to keeping emergency lines of communications open between Queen Anne Hill and Seattle’s Emergency Operations Center via 2-way radios at the West Queen Anne Playfield Emergency Communications Radio Hub Site (see links below for more information about this program).
At May’s Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, Troop 72 Eagle Scout and 2012 American Red Cross Hero Xander Beaumont presented Queen Anne’s Neighborhood Disaster Response Plan. Now Eagle Scout candidate Nick Saether plans to take the baton and work with Queen Anne businesses and organizations to “Be Prepared.”
In short, Nick’s Eagle Project will entail:
-
Contacting Upper Queen Anne Merchants to promote our booth at The Queen Anne Farmer’s Market on Thursday July 19 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM. Nick will be designing and distributing posters and flyers.
-
Promoting a Queen Anne Neighborhood Disaster Preparedness drill on Sunday, August 12 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM in conjunction with the Magnolia-Queen Anne District Council Emergency Preparedness Committee (MQADC-EPC) at the Farmers Market
-
Promoting our neighborhood disaster response plan and the August 12 drill to all businesses and organizations on Queen Anne
-
Promoting “Be Prepared MIQA” on Facebook and Twitter as a means to promote all of the above.
The goal of this project is to recruit neighbors and businesses to partner with MQADC-EPC as Troop 72 has done, eventually staffing 2 additional Emergency Communications Hub Sites at Queen Anne Bowl and Seattle Center’s Fisher Pavilion. In May, we addressed the Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce (GQACC) about our Neighborhood Disaster Preparedness Plan at their monthly luncheon. The GQACC agreed to help support this effort.
Here is what Upper Queen Anne Merchants can do to help:
-
Support Nick Saether’s effort by displaying posters promoting this effort and Be Prepared MIQA’s booth at next week’s QA Farmer’s Market.
-
Learn about our Neighborhood Disaster Response Plan and how it relates to your employees and customers who may not be able to leave Queen Anne Hill in a major disaster by viewing the links below.
-
Participate for approximately one hour in a neighborhood disaster response drill on Sunday August 12 to help our neighbors “Be Prepared.”
